We can no longer understand the present without its futures. This is the premise of our seminar "Curating Emerging Futures" It seems that only through predictive models can we understand political and technological developements today. Whether climate crisis, pandemic or emerging technologies: these phenomena can only be assessed regarding different possible futures. Should this reliance on prediction make us suspicious? How can we critically examine the turn towards the future?
In our seminar we examine constructions of futures from the perspective of exhibition makers. Where and under what conditions are futures constructed today? What curatorial methods can be used to exhibit futures? And what contribution can curating make to a more inclusive and participatory discussion about different futures?
We ask these questions in a fortnightly seminar and exhibition workshop. First we analyse different curatorial practices and then develop and try out formats ourselves.
"Curating Emerging Futures" is a seminar series developed by Rafael Dernbach and Jasmin Grimm. It was first held in the summer semester 2020 at Humboldt University Berlin as part of the interdisciplinary study programme "Diversity of Forms of Knowledge".
